Spring has sprung! While that still means we have 40 degree weather in Michigan, it also means summer is right around the corner and I can’t wait for those sunny summer days at the lake! There’s nothing like a day by the lakeshore, splashing in the water and soaking up the sun with all of my boys!
I decided to go ahead and sign the boys up for some swimming lessons at our local Aqua-Tots Swim School to get our little guys confident and comfortable in the water.
Choosing Aqua-Tots To Instruct Our Kids
Swimming is a necessary life skill, and one that my husband and I take very seriously. We’ve tried swimming lessons before through our community center for Max when he was about 4, but he didn’t benefit from the large class and lack of attention. Aqua-Tots has given him the time he needs to get comfortable, and I’m just thrilled with the confidence he’s gained already. The boys have both taken to the lessons very well, and I’ll feel much better being in and around the water with them once the summer air rolls in and we are ready to visit the lake!
Spring Enrollment was super easy – we simply chose the location closest to us and called to set up our classes. Aqua-Tots’ website is easy to navigate, and can tell you the available schedule online before you call to set up your classes. You can also submit your information online so your school can call you back to set everything up for you. If you have more than one child, you can enroll your children to swim on the same day at the same time each week as well. Aqua-Tots has super convenient hours to fit your needs (our local school is open until 8:00 p.m. on weekdays, and until 5:00 p.m. on weekends).
When you enroll, you’ll receive an Aqua-Tots bag with a T-shirt for each child featuring Ollie the Otter! Aqua-Tots has individual changing rooms for privacy, hair dryers at the ready, and a neat swimsuit dryer with plastic baggies so you aren’t carrying a soaking wet bathing suit or trunks!
Plus, they are open year-round with 90 degree water – what’s not to love?
We have both boys in class at the same time so I can be swimming in the Parent & Tot class while Max swims in the Seahorses class.
Classes are 30 minutes long. With one half hour to dedicate to learning from their instructor, kids can pay attention without getting frustrated or burnt out!
If you are unsure which class to enroll your child, let your school know you need help! They will ask you a few questions about how much time your child has spent in the water, how old they are, and how they currently feel about swimming so they can determine which class they might benefit starting out in. Your child can move up to the class they need to be in after enrollment as well without question.
What’s The Best Age To Start?
Aqua-Tots offers classes from 4 months of age and up.
In the Parent-Tot class Jax and I take together, there’s another mom who has been swimming with her little guy since he was about 6 months old (now he’s 8 months old!), and he does incredible in the water.
What If My Child Is Older?
Aqua-Tots’ programs are designed to help all children of all ages become confident in the water, no matter their ability!
My oldest son Max is 8 years old. He isn’t comfortable around the water at all. We’ve tried everything under the sun to get him interested, but he’s fought us the whole way. Part of that reason for that is his SPD. Aqua-Tots has a fun atmosphere that focuses on being gentle and encouraging.
We purchased Max a pair of goggles once we got there – this especially helps his SPD while in the water!
